Medical Management for Small Stones
Stones smaller than 5 to 6 mm have a good chance of passing on their own. Medication, hydration guidance and pain control help many stones clear within two to four weeks under monitoring.
ESWL, RIRS and PCNL treatment planning by Dr. Avijit Kumar, MCh Urologist, at Smt Ramkali Memorial Nursing Home, Pandu Nagar.
Kidney stone treatment in Kanpur is offered by Dr. Avijit Kumar using ESWL, RIRS and PCNL based on stone size and location. He is an MCh-qualified urologist at Smt Ramkali Memorial Nursing Home, Pandu Nagar, Kakadeo, Kanpur with over 17 years of surgical experience.
Kanpur sits in a region where kidney stones are unusually common. The groundwater across much of Uttar Pradesh carries high mineral content, and combined with the hot summers that push people into chronic mild dehydration, the result is one of the highest kidney stone rates in the country.
The Urological Society of India places North India firmly inside the so-called stone belt, where recurrence rates after a first stone can reach 50% within five years if the underlying cause is not addressed.
Dr. Avijit Kumar treats kidney stones of every size and type at his clinic in Pandu Nagar. From a 4 mm stone that simply needs the right medication and hydration plan, to a large staghorn calculus filling the entire collecting system, his MCh training and published research on stone surgery mean patients in Kanpur do not need to travel to Lucknow or Delhi for advanced care.
Symptoms
Kidney stones often announce themselves suddenly. The pain is famously severe and may come in waves as the stone moves through the urinary tract.
If you experience severe pain with fever, do not wait. A stone blocking the kidney with infection behind it is a urological emergency.

Treatment Options
There is no single best treatment for every kidney stone. The right approach depends on the size, exact location, density seen on CT scan and overall kidney function.
Stones smaller than 5 to 6 mm have a good chance of passing on their own. Medication, hydration guidance and pain control help many stones clear within two to four weeks under monitoring.
ESWL uses focused shock waves from outside the body to break a stone into small fragments that pass in urine. It works best for selected stones under 1.5 cm.
RIRS is a scarless laser procedure using a thin flexible scope passed through the natural urinary passage to dust stones inside the kidney.
For stones over 2 cm and staghorn calculi, PCNL is often the gold standard. A small tract is created through the back to fragment and remove the stone.
Stone size, hardness, location and kidney drainage are reviewed before deciding between medicines, ESWL, RIRS or PCNL.
Patients with acute stone pain can call the clinic for appointment guidance and urgent assessment when symptoms suggest obstruction or infection.

A 10 mm stone is generally too large to pass on its own. RIRS laser surgery is usually a strong option for a stone of this size, offering scarless removal with a short hospital stay. If the stone is very hard or located in the lower kidney, Dr. Kumar may recommend PCNL. The decision is made after reviewing your CT scan.
Laser kidney stone surgery, also called RIRS, is performed under spinal or general anaesthesia, so there is no pain during the procedure. Afterwards, mild discomfort and urinary urgency may occur for a few days because of the ureteric stent and are managed with medicines.
Cost depends on the procedure chosen. ESWL is usually more economical, RIRS is mid-range and PCNL may cost more because of the surgical setup involved. Most health insurance policies cover kidney stone surgery. The clinic team provides a cost estimate after consultation and CT review.
Yes, if left untreated. A stone that blocks urine flow puts back-pressure on the kidney, and prolonged obstruction combined with infection can cause permanent loss of kidney function. A stone causing obstruction, especially with fever, needs prompt treatment.
After RIRS or ESWL, many patients return to desk work within 2 to 3 days. After PCNL, recovery may take about a week. Dr. Kumar gives each patient a personalised recovery timeline based on the procedure and their type of work.
